Choose scenarios to compare
Ask each provider how the same example diagnosis would be assessed under its current wording. The name of an illness is only the start of that comparison. Request the complete definitions rather than relying on a marketing list or a headline count of covered conditions.
Separate full and partial payments
Make a table of which benefits pay the full insured amount and which pay a smaller amount. Ask whether a partial payment changes the remaining cover. If children’s cover is included, check the eligible ages, qualifying conditions and payment limits separately.
Connect the benefit to its purpose
Decide what a lump sum would be used for: adapting a home, reducing debt or supporting time away from work. Compare it with the separate role of income protection and medical cover. A broker can help explain the terms that would apply to your medical and work history.
Take these questions to your provider
- What medical criteria must be met for each relevant condition?
- Are there survival periods, exclusions or other eligibility requirements?
- Would a critical illness claim reduce or end the life cover?
- Who qualifies, what are the limits and are additional benefits included?
