Write a household support budget
List the costs a household would still face, such as housing, childcare and essential bills. Note any outstanding debts and the years for which support might be needed. Include the practical value of unpaid care rather than looking only at the highest salary.
Inventory existing support
Ask an employer about death-in-service benefits and when they end. Record existing policies and savings, then check whether those resources are actually available for the purpose you have in mind. Avoid assuming workplace benefits follow you into a new job.
Ask how the structure changes the outcome
Compare the chosen term, payout pattern and who is insured. Ask what happens after a claim on a joint policy and how a future change in family circumstances could be handled. Get qualified advice where ownership, trusts or tax treatment affect the decision.
Take these questions to your provider
- What commitments need support, for how much and until when?
- When does the policy pay, and what cover remains afterwards?
- Are premiums guaranteed or reviewable, and how does increasing cover affect them?
- How would money reach the intended people, and is advice on a trust appropriate?
