PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY

Professional indemnity renewal: keep past work in the conversation

Compare the professional work insured, claim timing and the terms that remain important after a project ends.

Create a history of the work

List services provided in previous years as well as those sold now. Identify major projects, jurisdictions and work performed through earlier business structures. Ask the insurer how the proposed policy treats that history and whether a retroactive date limits it.

Raise complaints before changing cover

Review unresolved customer concerns with the insurer or broker under the existing reporting conditions. Ask when a circumstance should be notified rather than deciding for yourself that it is too small to matter. Keep a record of the advice and any notification.

Plan for the end of the business

Discuss what would happen after retirement, sale or closure. Ask whether run-off cover is needed for past work and how long a relevant contract or professional obligation may continue. Do not assume the final renewal date is the last date on which a claim can arise.

Take these questions to your provider

  • Do all advice, design, consultancy and outsourced activities fit the wording?
  • What retroactive date applies, and what does it mean for earlier projects?
  • When must complaints or circumstances be reported, even without a formal claim?
  • Is the limit per claim or aggregate, and how do defence costs use it?
