VAN INSURANCE

Van cover and tool cover: build a two-part checklist

Match your van policy to the journeys, goods and work that actually keep your business moving.

List the van and its contents separately

Create a vehicle record and an equipment inventory. Include tools, hired equipment and stock, with realistic replacement values. Ask the insurer to identify which policy responds to each item rather than relying on a description such as business cover.

Describe the overnight routine

Record where the van is parked, which equipment stays inside and what locks or alarms are used. Ask about unattended-vehicle restrictions and evidence required after theft. A security condition needs to fit the way the business can actually operate.

Plan the next working day

Ask whether a replacement van can carry your normal load and whether emergency equipment hire is covered elsewhere. Keep invoices and serial numbers in a secure place away from the vehicle. Review the inventory when new equipment is purchased.

Take these questions to your provider

  • What goods are carried, for whom and for what payment?
  • Are contents included, separately insured or excluded, especially overnight?
  • Have racking, conversions, signwriting and other modifications been disclosed?
  • Would any replacement van be suitable for the work and available for long enough?
