Business insurance: draw the gaps between the policies

A package name is less useful than a map of which section responds to each business risk.

Analysis and practical interpretation. This is an evergreen feature, not a report of a new market event.

Begin with what the business does

A business might advise clients, hold customer data, employ people and own equipment. Those activities create different exposures. Instead of starting with a package label, describe the operations in plain language and list a few plausible losses. That gives a broker or insurer something concrete to match against the proposed sections and helps prevent important activities disappearing inside a broad trade description.

A modular package needs a map

Hiscox's business range illustrates the modular approach, with different liability, cyber and property options. The key word is selected: a provider offering a section does not establish that your quotation includes it. Put the schedule beside your risk list and identify the relevant section, limit and excess for each example. Leave any unanswered item visible rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Contracts add another layer

A client or landlord may ask for particular cover or limits. Show those requirements to an authorised adviser and ask whether the actual wording meets them. The limit alone does not establish that a contractual obligation is insured. Keep the accepted business activities, territories and subcontracting arrangements consistent with what the company really does, especially when taking on work that differs from its usual projects.

Make review part of business change

A new employee, overseas customer, office or service can be a useful trigger for an insurance discussion. Assign responsibility for keeping the information current instead of leaving it until renewal. Our view is that business cover works best as a documented part of operating the company. The goal is not to buy every available section, but to understand the chosen protection and the losses the business retains.
