CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER · ANALYSIS

Why counting covered illnesses is a poor way to compare protection

Definitions, severity and the effect of a first payment can matter more than the length of a condition list.

Analysis and practical interpretation. This is an evergreen feature, not a report of a new market event.

A name is not a claims definition

Two contracts can mention the same illness while using different qualifying definitions. A list of conditions is therefore an introduction to the wording, not a complete comparison. Ask what evidence and severity are required and whether a survival period applies. Avoid interpreting a familiar medical label as a guarantee of payment under any policy that includes the word.

Full and partial payments have different jobs

Some structures pay a full lump sum for a qualifying event, while other benefits can make partial payments. Vitality's Serious Illness Cover is an example of a severity-based approach. The meaningful question is how a payment would meet the financial need you are considering. A smaller payment earlier in a condition's development and a full payment at a defined threshold are different trade-offs.

Look beyond the first claim

Ask what happens to remaining cover after a payment, whether later claims can qualify and how related conditions are treated. Where life cover is linked to the arrangement, check any effect on that benefit too. These questions make the contract's sequence visible. They are more useful than assuming that multiple-claim language means every future diagnosis creates an additional full payout.

Compare scenarios with an explanation

Choose a small set of example conditions and ask the provider or adviser to explain the relevant definitions in each offer. Keep the explanation with the current wording. Then consider the intended use of a lump sum alongside income protection or other resources, without assuming those products are substitutes. Our editorial position is simple: compare the payment mechanism before giving weight to a large condition count.
