TRAVEL INSURANCE

Annual travel cover: check the trip limits before booking

Compare medical, cancellation and disruption cover against the trip you have actually booked.

Make a calendar of actual journeys

List the length and destination of every planned trip, including short breaks and work trips. Ask whether the policy covers each type of journey. An annual policy is not the same thing as uninterrupted cover for a year-long trip.

Check who is travelling together

For a couple or family policy, ask whether each person can travel independently. Confirm age limits and any conditions about children travelling without an insured adult. Recheck the policy when a traveller’s circumstances or medical information changes.

Read cancellation and activity sections together

Match the cancellation limit to prepaid costs and check when that cover begins. Then identify activities that need extra cover. If you plan to ski, take a cruise or hire equipment, ask about the specific benefits rather than relying on the geographical area alone.

Take these questions to your provider

  • What conditions, symptoms, investigations and changes in health must be declared?
  • Is the limit enough for each traveller’s unrecoverable costs, and which reasons qualify?
  • Are all countries, stopovers and planned activities within scope?
  • Who must I contact before treatment or repatriation, and what can I do in an emergency?
