BUSINESS INSURANCE

Your first business insurance conversation: a preparation checklist

Build a cover plan around your work, people, premises and customers instead of a generic business label.

Prepare an operating picture

Write a short description of the actual work, customers and places where it happens. Include online sales, overseas clients, visits to customer premises and subcontracting. Bring sample contracts so a broker can identify insurance requirements that a generic occupation label misses.

Separate what could be lost

Make distinct lists for claims against the business, damage to its assets and interruption to income. Note which losses the business could absorb and which could stop it operating. This provides a clearer conversation than asking for every possible add-on without a reason.

Agree a review routine

Keep the schedule, statements supplied to the insurer and renewal dates together. Identify who will report changes and incidents. Review cover when hiring, moving premises or launching a new service, rather than waiting for renewal to discover the insured description is outdated.

Take these questions to your provider

  • Does the business description include every material service and territory?
  • Have employees, temporary staff and subcontracting arrangements been explained?
  • What insurance limits and obligations do customer or lease agreements specify?
  • How will new products, locations, turnover or equipment be reported?
