MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE

Motorcycle theft cover: check the conditions, not just the limit

Look beyond the bike’s value to riding use, security, equipment and the terms of a theft claim.

Turn security wording into a routine

Ask the insurer to explain when an approved lock must be used and what a declared garage means in practice. Discuss overnight stops away from home and parking during work. If a condition is unclear, obtain a written explanation before relying on it.

Keep a record of the whole bike

Retain photographs, purchase evidence and details of declared accessories and modifications. Ask whether the sum quoted includes those items. Check the theft excess separately from other excesses and work out the amount you could need to absorb.

Know the first actions after a theft

Keep the claims number and policy details somewhere accessible without the motorcycle. Follow police and insurer reporting instructions promptly, and record the reference numbers. Ask in advance what keys, documents and evidence the insurer would expect.

Take these questions to your provider

  • Which locks, storage arrangements and security routines are required?
  • Are modifications, luggage, helmets and leathers insured and at what limits?
  • Are commuting, pillion riding and trips abroad included in the stated use?
  • How is the motorcycle valued after a total loss, and what evidence is needed?
