GADGET & PHONE INSURANCE

Phone insurance: compare the replacement, not just the premium

Check replacement terms, excesses and existing cover before paying to protect a device twice.

Ask what comes back after a claim

Confirm whether the provider repairs the device or supplies a replacement and whether a refurbished equivalent is acceptable under the policy. Ask about storage capacity and model availability. The benefit may be an equivalent working device rather than the newest version of the phone.

Check the real cost and inconvenience

Put the annual premium and claim excess beside an independent repair estimate and the value of the phone. Ask about delivery times and any temporary replacement. Keep the cost of restoring access to work or essential services in mind without treating it as an insured benefit unless stated.

Keep eligibility evidence ready

Save the purchase receipt, device identifier and any required registration confirmation. Ask about second-hand or refurbished purchases and reporting deadlines after loss or theft. Review existing policies first so the new cover addresses a gap you have actually identified.

Take these questions to your provider

  • Are loss, theft, liquid damage and accidental damage all included?
  • Will the device be repaired, replaced with a refurbished unit or settled another way?
  • Are age, ownership, purchase source or registration conditions satisfied?
  • How does the excess compare with repair costs and the device’s current value?
