Build a history before requesting quotes
Ask your vet for the records needed to answer the new insurer’s questions accurately. Include symptoms and investigations as requested, not just diagnoses you remember. Ask how related conditions are defined and whether exclusions would apply to treatment your existing insurer covers.
Compare continuity as well as price
Write down the current policy’s remaining limits, renewal structure and treatment already underway. Put these next to the new offer’s exclusions and waiting periods. A lower premium does not show whether the new policy would contribute to the same future bills.
Confirm the accepted terms before cancelling
Obtain the new insurer’s written terms and start date, and understand any gap in protection. Ask the existing insurer what cancellation means for pending or continuing claims. Base the decision on the two actual offers rather than an assumption that one pet policy transfers to another.
Take these questions to your provider
- Is the limit annual, per condition or subject to a time limit?
- Is there both a fixed excess and a percentage share, particularly as the pet ages?
- How are previous symptoms, related conditions and waiting periods handled?
- What happens to ongoing treatment if I switch, cancel or allow cover to lapse?
