Choosing health cover for your family

The questions to ask when more than one person needs cover.

Compare each person’s cover

A family policy brings people together under one arrangement, but each member’s medical history and benefits still matter. Ask for the details for every adult and child.

Build a family checklist

List your preferred local hospitals, the services you want to understand and the people who will use the policy. Ask whether children’s benefits differ and how the excess applies to each person.

Look beyond a family discount

Compare the full annual cost and benefits with alternatives. A discount is useful only if the underlying policy meets your requirements. Ask what happens as children get older.

When switching

Do not assume that conditions covered by your old insurer will transfer. Get written confirmation of the new terms and start date before deciding what to do with existing cover.
