Separate treatment from income
Health insurance pays towards eligible healthcare. It is different from income protection, which is designed to help replace income under its own terms. A quicker appointment does not guarantee that you will be able to work.
Map out your priorities
Ask yourself which parts of your work would be affected by an illness. Then ask providers about access to consultations, diagnostics and follow-up treatment. Keep medical cover and cash-flow planning as separate decisions.
Questions for a provider
Can appointments fit around work? What referrals are needed? What is included in outpatient care? How would physiotherapy be authorised? Ask for written answers for the specific plan you are considering.
Choose a sustainable budget
Put the annual premium, possible excess and renewal uncertainty alongside your other business and household costs. Seek tailored tax advice before assuming a premium can be treated as a business expense.
