COSTS & VALUE

How a health insurance excess works

Understand your contribution before you need to claim.

Know what you are agreeing to pay

An excess is the amount you are responsible for under the policy’s claim terms. The amount alone is not enough: ask when and how often it applies.

Ask three practical questions

Does the excess apply per person, per policy year, per claim or on another basis? What happens to ongoing treatment when the policy renews? Are any services exempt?

Balance premium and cash reserve

A higher excess may reduce the premium, but leaves more for you to pay when using the cover. Compare the saving with an amount you could comfortably pay at short notice.

Keep the comparison fair

Compare quotes with the same excess where possible. If that is not possible, write the differences beside the premium rather than judging the cheaper quote on price alone.
